You put things off, then do your best work right before the deadline, and you have been told your whole life to stop.

In the latest episode of Powered by Instinct: Private Sessions, David Kolbe tells Ava, a National Security major, to keep procrastinating: with her wiring, real pressure and a hard deadline are exactly when her best work shows up.

The real trap is not starting late, but knowing when to stop researching and start writing.

The full Private Session is live now and it goes far deeper than this clip. Watch it before you scroll (link in the comments below 👇).

Did he really just tell a college student to procrastinate??

In the latest episode of Powered by Instinct: Private Sessions, David Kolbe reads Ava's Kolbe A™ Index result for the first time and gives her the advice no teacher ever would: she was built to work under pressure, and her last-minute instinct was never the flaw she was told it was.

The idea part of a birthday party is natural. But the logistics? Not so much.

Jenna Cooper, recent guest on Powered by Instinct: Private Sessions, had the realization that the creative part of planning comes easily to her (picking the theme, dreaming up the vision, getting the whole thing off the ground).

What doesn't come as easily is remembering the knife or making sure someone actually picks up the cake. So now she's handing that off to her husband and keeping the part that plays to her strengths.

Most people assume if it's their party, their project, their responsibility, they have to do all of it themselves. But strengths don't work that way. Some parts of a task will drain you no matter how capable you are at them. Other parts barely feel like work.

Jenna made the same connection at her job. She works in an organization built on data and research, and this conversation helped her see her Fact Finder strength as something the organization actually needs, not just a trait she has to manage around.

This is your sign to figure out what gives you energy, figure out what drains it, and stop pretending those two things carry equal weight.

The full conversation is up now on Powered by Instinct: Private Sessions. Link in the comments below 👇

Some people need a plan before they start a project.

This is not a preference for them, it's their instincts.

We call it Initiating Follow Thru, one end of the Action Mode that shows how people deal with structure. If you score 7-10 there, systematizing is where you start. Before you take action, you're organizing information, sorting out what's similar and what's different, building something you can actually work from.

On the other end of that same Action Mode, people skip the plan entirely and adapt as they go.

Neither way is better. They're just different starting points for the same problem, and once you know which one you default to, or which one your team defaults to, planning gets a lot easier and there's a lot less friction.

If you want to find out how you naturally operate, take the Kolbe A™ Index at Kolbe.com.

What’s more important for a company than how the leaders at the top work together?

Cameron Herold is an expert in that dynamic, but he’s built that understanding up over the years. And one huge moment in his journey happened when Kolbe finally helped him understand the real reason he had been struggling to work with his VP of Operations.
