Part of recognizing addiction involves awareness of frequent signs and the three components, sometimes referred to as "the three Cs" of addiction. Signs or symptoms associated with each of these components that may indicate an opioid abuse problem are presented in the following table.

In order to be effective leaders, case managers (CMs) need written and verbal communication skills and the capacity to form relationships with patients, co-workers, and colleagues.

This includes the ability to influence, interview, and negotiate.

Case management also requires listening, presentation and public speaking skills along with the ability to share information effectively to diverse groups.

Case managers use information to develop plans and to identify critical issues. Critical thinking skills facilitate CMs' ability to understand instructions and policies and to evaluate information and situations in order to make independent decisions.

Attitudes towards individuals with addiction are heavily moralized. This may result in both self- and other-labeling and, consequently, the development of a "spoiled" public identity.

CMs and other interprofessional care team members can provide education and leadership in destigmatizing addiction across the entire continuum of care.
