Boise folks, we got some frost damage last week. I've mainly been seeing it in the tops of Japanese maples. The leaves have shriveled and some have scorch marks a the base of the leaf where the veins connect. My recommendation is to do nothing. Do not prune, do not apply fertilizer or anything you buy from a garden store. Wait to see how the tree recovers. Then when the danger of a late frost is over there will likely be a little tip dieback to clip back. The trees used the saved energy from last summer to leaf out and this damage will set them back a bit but should not kill them.

If you feel the burning need to do something, inspect the base of your tree. Most Japanese maples get planted too deep. You want to see the flair to the roots crown at the base. If your tree goes into the ground like a telephone pole, it's too deep. Scrape back dirt and mulch from the base of the tree until you see the trunk flair into the roots. To do this you may have to break off small feeder roots. Don't by shy about that. If there are any large circling roots around the base cut them or wait until it is warmer and then cut them. If you have doubts, send me a picture of the circling roots.
