Happy 95th Birthday to the great Jackie McLean… He had such a profound impact on so many of us that came through his Department.. During my time at Hartt he was ever present and super encouraging, even sending me postcard from a tour he was on in Italy..
I’ll never forget the first time I played with him at School assembly.. We were playing the tune, Solar. I did my best to play some smooth swinging time behind him when he turned around and erupted, “ GIMME ALL YOU GOT!!” He wanted FIRE 🔥… Thanks for sharing your fire with all your students JMac!!

Touched down and did my usual Day 1 ritual here in New Orleans yesterday.. Drop bags, , for beignets, stroll through the quarter and end up at … Later that afternoon we all converged at the Toulouse theatre to watch a private screening of ‘s beautiful new film- Little Feat: The Documentary Pretty surreal to be there with Billy, Kenny and Fred as we watched them experience,” THIS IS YOUR LIFE!”… even more surreal to be a part of the story.. I came to a lot of New Orleans music through listening to them so it all feels so full circle… For those that haven’t checked out LFs music, go listen to those records and help us all celebrate this incredible band. F-E-A-T!!! 🍅👠💃🕺🏻

I first met Joe at track and field day at Elm Hill School. I was in 4th grade and he was in 2nd, I think… he’s one of my oldest and dearest friends on the planet… truly one of the most gifted musicians I’ve known.. he and his family have been an inspiration my whole life.
On Thursday he suffered a heart attack and is still in ICU.. please consider donating to help with his medical expenses.
