Day 6: The Things I Never Travel Without

After traveling to more than 35 countries and working in travel security for years, one question I hear all the time is:

"What's in your travel bag?"

The answer isn't about packing more—it's about packing smarter. These are six essentials I never leave home without because they help me stay proactive, prepared, and protected.

🔋 Portable Charger – Your phone is your GPS, boarding pass, emergency contact, translator, and lifeline. Don't let a dead battery leave you stranded.

🛡️ Personal Safety Device – Whether it's Invisawear or another trusted safety tool, having a discreet way to call for help provides an added layer of confidence when traveling.

💡 Small Flashlight – Useful during power outages, in hotel stairwells, parking garages, or anywhere visibility is limited.

💵 Emergency Cash – I always carry a small amount of cash, stored separately from my wallet, in case cards aren't accepted or my wallet is lost or stolen.

📄 Backup Documents – Keep digital copies of your passport, driver's license, insurance cards, and itinerary, and carry printed copies separately from the originals.

🧠 A Prepared Mindset – The most important thing you can pack is awareness. Pay attention to your surroundings, trust your instincts, and think ahead.

People often ask me if traveling is safe. My answer is always the same:

Travel is one of life's greatest gifts. The goal isn't to travel in fear—it's to travel with confidence. Preparation gives you the freedom to enjoy the journey.

Day 3: Your Hotel Room Should Feel Like a Safe Haven
After a long day of traveling, most people walk into their hotel room, drop their bags, and relax.
I do something different.
Before I unpack a single item, I take a few minutes to conduct what I call a Hotel Safety Check. It's a simple routine that can make a big difference if an emergency or security issue arises.
Here's my checklist:
🏨 Know Your Way Out
As soon as you enter your room, locate the nearest emergency exits. Count the doors between your room and the exit so you can find your way even if visibility is limited.
🔒 Check the Door
Test the deadbolt, security latch, and peephole. If something doesn't work properly, request another room.
🚪 Never Open the Door Without Verifying
If someone claims to be hotel staff, don't rely on their word alone. Call the front desk to confirm before opening the door.
🪟 Take a Quick Look Around
Check that windows and any connecting doors are locked. If your room has a safe, make sure it's working before storing valuables.
📍 Protect Your Privacy
Avoid saying your room number out loud at check-in, and if the front desk announces it, politely ask them to write it down instead.
These aren't complicated steps—they're smart habits.
As a travel safety expert, I've learned that preparation isn't about expecting something to go wrong. It's about creating layers of protection so you can truly relax and enjoy your trip.
In fact, I recently shared many of these same hotel safety strategies in a national media interview because travelers often assume locking the door is enough. While it's an important first step, there are several other simple precautions that can further enhance your safety.
