This week in Washington we are writing for our first responders. Too often, police officers are asked to do work that falls outside the realm of law enforcement because they are not equipped with the human resources necessary to respond to the diversity of calls that come through the police switchboard. The solutions is simple, diversify our first responders! We can hire more paramedics to deal with mental health calls and social workers to respond to domestic disturbances. According to Barry Friedman, Max Markham and Scarlet Neath writing for the Policing Project at the NYU School of Law, "police officers cannot be expected to resolve every social issue or every dispute or problem," writing on May 30th for The New York Times. Negative outcomes are unnecessary and ineffective when de-escalation training is needed to respond to a domestic dispute. We need to equip police with the resources necessary to respond to calls coming through the police switchboard. Alternative first responders in 130 communities across the United States are responding to domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and disputes between families and neighbors. Call Congress at 202 224 3121 and ask for them to fund First Responders that match the challenges of 21st century law enforcement.

This week in Washington we are writing to protect healthcare. This Administration recently celebrated the signature of One Big Beautiful Bill on the 4th of July yet millions are set to be cut from healthcare funding. Accorrding to The New York Times on May 14th $ 900 billion in Medicaid funding has been cut from the budget. In addition, marketplace premiums are set to double or triple with the expiration of government intervention through the healthcare law. According to aha.org, 70 million Americans receive Medicaid healthcare benefits and any reduction in funding could have devastating effects. Medicare covers 65 million Seniors and Disabled Americans and is as much a healthcare initative as it is an anti-poverty program according to patelco.org. Before it's introduction, senior citizens made up a disproportionate number of the nation's indigent and 1 in 5 Americans were poor. Medicare has reduced that number to 1 in 9. According to CMS.gov, 24 million Americans receive care through the healthcare exchange. The Department of Government Efficiency has taken a buzzsaw to federal healthcare programs and we will give no quarter. Write the United States Senate and demand that they reinstate coverage for our disabled, seniors, workers and impaired here https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/repeal-1
Tell the Senate: Repeal the cuts passed in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill! The passage of Trump’s Big Ugly Bill was the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in American history—giving historic tax breaks to the wealthy and worsening income inequality across the country. As the cost of groceries continues to burden people across the country, millions of ...
