Bob Hall, a pioneering force in the sport of wheelchair racing and a proud member of the Greater Boston Track Club in the late 1970s and early 1980s, passed away on April 12 at the age of 74. A childhood polio survivor, Bob made history at the 1975 Boston Marathon as the first athlete to compete in a wheelchair, completing the course in an astonishing 2:58 to earn his finisher’s certificate and forever change the landscape of endurance sports. A two-time Boston Marathon champion, innovator of modern racing chair design, and tireless advocate for inclusion, Bob’s courage and vision opened the door for generations of athletes to follow. Honored as Grand Marshal of the 2025 Boston Marathon on the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking achievement, Bob remained deeply connected to the sport he helped transform. His legacy lives on in every wheelchair athlete who takes to the starting line, and he will be remembered as a true trailblazer who reshaped what was possible.
