I feel very grateful to have connected with inspiring people who share a love and passion for craft and textiles; and in these same connections, have discovered a way to also share my passion for the process of craft and commitment to mindbody awareness. The wisdom that arises out of textile practices in combination with internal healing arts, such as taiji and qigong, creates space for nourishing and healing.

It was deeply fulfilling to be able to share my experience and knowledge in these practices this past year while co-teaching with Diane Ericson (Design Outside the Lines) and while leading a recent workshop at Suzanne Connor’s Aya Fiber Studio (picture here). Thank you to all the amazing people who joined me in these workshops and collaborated to create such enriching experiences!

I appreciate the community having awareness around textiles/clothing and the environmental impact. It's always a question of how we can do better?
I think, ideally, the most sustainable clothing would come from using moss and leaves in the wilderness...weaving with twine. That doesn't work in everyday life nor is every substance in nature appropriate for use in textile work. With this in mind, I strive to work with great respect for the environment.
An important point I'd like to add is that the technique of Shibori goes deeper than I ever expected. The technique itself, and the practice of it, is a teacher. When creating shibori, one is honoring the materials, oneself and ultimately the environment. I owe a great deal to Yoshiko Wada for guiding me into the world of shibori and opening my mind to its more conceptual side. I have experienced through my own practice of shibori that it is a technique that is connected deeply to the wisdom of the earth.

The color red is a celebratory color and has been an inspiration for some time in my textile work. I have dyed many different shades over a number of years to find favorite signature shades. Red is representative of the heart, perhaps the point of greatest connection, both inside and out. The heart works hard and does what is necessary. It also feels deeply from anger to love, a spectrum of emotions we may learn to appreciate or to transform.

In this very difficult year of political, social, health and economic upheaval, chaos in our natural world and in our bodies and minds has deeply affected us all. Coming back to the color red, refocusing on the heart connection, feeling anger and feeling love have became mantras and practices during these very difficult times. Sometimes, I sit for a moment, hand over heart and close my eyes, simply allowing myself to be.

May we celebrate our deepest connections during this holiday season...to our own hearts, to our families, to our community, to the hearts of others we know, and to the world that we do not yet know.
