Ballroom to boogie: How dancing can improve seniors’ brain health | Brain | UT Southwestern Medical Center Exercise is vital to healthy living as we age, and dancing can help seniors in a variety of ways. From improving muscle tone and strength to social interaction and reducing dementia risk, dancing can help seniors live independently longer and with a higher quality of life.

Join instructor Michael Winward for this beginner-level ballroom dance workshop. Michael takes a gender-neutral approach, teaching routines that include the leader and follower roles of each dance style. No partner is necessary to attend. This workshop is designed for solo participants dancing in their living spaces. It will include a brief history, acknowledging the origins of each dance style: Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Cha-cha, Rumba, and East Coast Swing. Michael is an independent dance artist, based in Boston. He is the founding director of Steps in Time®, an adaptive ballroom dance program serving assisted living and memory care communities in and around Greater Boston. He is the co-producer of Dancing Queerly, an annual festival of performances, workshops, discussions and social dance gatherings by and for the LGBTQ+ community.
This 8-week series will be held Tuesday mornings from 10:00-11:00 am ET, from November 3 through December 22, 2020.
Suggested donations: $10 per class, or $75 for the entire 8-week series. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
