Second print on the “Immigrant tools” series. For this print I was thinking of the construction industry that relies so heavily on cash, temporary, workers and who are often given the most grueling work.
Still working with monotypes. I was also very happy with the textured effect I got with Rives BFK paper and a medium pressure.

Last semester I took a class on Aztec symbols and imagery. For my last assignment I was allowed to do a creative project and I chose to create a pair of portraits that contrast the Aztec style vs our modern styles. The project ended up turning into an exploration of materials. I painted the first portrait on modern canvas and used all the tools I normally use, but for the second portrait I used the closest materials to what the Aztecs would have preferred, natural pigments, glue skin rabbit gesso and Amate bark paper. I also painted closely to the style of the Tlaquilos (traditional Aztec artists).
I am very happy with the end result, and although I have not yet come up with a title for these two I thought it was time to post them.

“Immigrant tools 1”
15”x19” Monotype

I am working on a series of prints about the different industries that benefit from immigrant labor. These industries rely on the fact that many immigrants have no choice but to take the abuse a low wages they offer.
I chose to do these as monotypes because this process, as taught by the amazing , allows me to develop the idea and design with each print. “Growing” the idea and the print in a sense.

Stay tune for more prints on this series!

I’ve been sitting here for a couple of hours now, contemplating this single line.
