A remarkable 28-foot Native American canoe, estimated to be around 1,000 years old, was recently excavated from Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina. The discovery provides a rare glimpse into the lives of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, whose ancestors skillfully crafted these vessels for transportation, fishing, and trade.
Preserved in waterlogged conditions, the canoe required careful excavation and conservation to prevent damage. Archaeologists and heritage experts are meticulously studying its construction methods and materials, which reveal the technological innovations and woodworking expertise of the era.
Beyond its scientific importance, the canoe will become a cultural artifact and educational exhibit, likely displayed in a museum or cultural center. The discovery honors the legacy of the Waccamaw Siouan people, connecting modern generations to the ingenuity, culture, and history of their ancestors.

In a groundbreaking step toward respect and cultural sensitivity, the U.S. Department of the Interior has begun removing the term "squaw" from federal lands.
Led by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to hold the position, this initiative aims to erase a term historically used as a racial and sexist slur against Indigenous women. 🌿
Nearly 650 places across the United States, including locations in Wisconsin, are being renamed to better honor Indigenous communities and their heritage.
This decision reflects the importance of representation and the need to create a more inclusive cultural landscape.
It also highlights the ongoing journey to reconcile with Native communities and their rich history. 🌍
By making these changes, we take a step closer to a future where respect and understanding guide our shared spaces
