Research study! We (myself and graduate students in my lab at CU Boulder) are studying what concerns people have about the future of generative AI... But instead of just asking you to fill out a standard survey about your opinions, we're asking you to pitch a near-future science fiction story with a cautionary tale for generative AI, as well as your ideas for more positive futures. There's also an optional part where you create a little Netflix-style Black Mirror episode card for your pitch.

There is a lot more detail here! https://www.internetruleslab.com/black-mirror-survey

Happy to answer any questions in the comments. And if you know someone with strong opinions about AI in either direction, or who loves science fiction, please share this with them!

If you've ever seen a news story about generative AI and thought ‘this could be an episode of Black Mirror’ then you might be interested in this research study!

Later today (3:30pm MT) I'm giving a plenary talk for the NCWIT Summit. The title is "AI Ethics for Everyone" but the core message is essentially that ethics *should* be for everyone and by everyone -- as in, every person studying or working in tech, but also that we should be empowering more people to critique AI. It will be livestreamed!

The 2026 starts tomorrow at the University of Colorado Boulder! 🎉

This grassroots gathering will serve as a brain trust to ensure our technical future belongs to everyone: ncwit.org/summit/2026-summit

Research on overtrust and overreliance on AI (and robots) and the phenomenon of “algorithm appreciation” - this is why I too worry about people trusting the output of LLMs (maybe even over humans) too much :(
