Many people don’t realize that tree roots are a very common cause of sewer line problems. In fact, over time tree roots can wedge their way into your sewer pipe through the joints, causing tremendous damage to your pipes.

The earliest type of septic tank was known as a "cesspool" and was invented by the ancient Romans. A large stone vat was built to hold human waste. Solids settled at the bottom and lighter items floated to the top. That partially cleaned liquid at the top was then drained into a body of water nearby, such as a river or the sea.

Many septic tanks have small, 4- to 6-inch inlet and outlet pipes that extend above ground level. These pipes can be used to remove clogs or quickly inspect the tank content level, but they are not designed to be used for pumping.
