Are cyclists allowed to roll through stop signs in Colorado?
The short answer- yes.
🚲Colorado cyclists can legally treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs under a 2022 state law designed to improve bike safety at intersections.
Here’s what that means for riders 15+:
🔹 Stop signs can be treated as yields when the intersection is clear
🔹 Red lights can be treated as stop signs before proceeding safely
🔹 Riders rolling through stop signs must stay under 10 mph
🔹 Left turns on red are allowed only onto one-way streets
🔹 Bike-specific signals and signs must still be obeyed
The law also applies to other low-speed devices like scooters and wheelchairs. Riders can always choose to come to a full stop if preferred.
The goal? Fewer crashes, safer intersections, and more predictable movement for everyone on the road. 🚴♀️💛
