TOMORROW IS ELECTION DAY!

Actually, today (Monday) is the last day to mail your ballot. You can still vote in person (or drop your ballot off) tomorrow at the Bountiful Library on Tuesday between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. If your ballot is mailed on Tuesday, it won’t be counted. The postmark must be on Monday.

Mailed returns have been lower than normal, and election officials (and candidates) worry that turnout might be unusually low. That will be especially unfortunate if your favored candidate loses by 3 votes. Low voter turnout would be unfortunate for other reasons as well, chief among them that the right to vote has been earned in blood and sacrifice. Thomas Jefferson wisely noted that “We do not have government by the majority; we have government by the majority of those who participate.” Or Susan Anthony: “Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it.”

It has been a most challenging year in so many ways for so many of us. Yet, for all of that, it has been a beautiful Bountiful autumn; and in a few weeks it will be Thanksgiving. I am thankful every day to live in this wonderful city of ours – it is a peaceful haven, a friendly and welcoming community, and a wonderful place to call home. Being Bountiful’s mayor is a grand experience; and it’s a privilege to serve you. We’re fortunate to have really good people in all our city departments, who work hard to provide outstanding service and make the wheels go ‘round all through the town.
