This is so true!

A big part of my job is not only reporting stories, but finding stories to report. That can sometimes be challenging.

One day, when I was a few weeks into my first job as a journalist, all my stories fell through. My news director said, “Go to a hair dresser or barber shop. They know everything that’s going on and have the best stories!”

He was right.

Yesterday we were in Salt Lake and I stopped by the Dollar Barbershop for a trim. I was there about 30 minutes and stories from a variety of people that I found fascinating, including:

- A single mom working two full-time jobs to support her daughter attending a prestigious design school.

- A therapist who prescribes ballroom dance classes for couples. It teaches them how to trust their partner, physical touch, how to follow direction and more.

- A woman who works for an airline and spent over seven hours on the phone helping a passenger stuck in a foreign country get home for his mother’s funeral.

- A newly divorced woman who is starting to date again and is exploring the world of dating apps.

- A man learning English who just moved to Utah from Vietnam.

Maybe I need to start a series where I go to a barber shop or salon every week and interview a random person.
