Hi-Yo Silver — Away! Two words. One white horse. A legend that defined an entire generation of American cowboys.
The story began on radio in 1933. A masked Texas Ranger left for dead by an outlaw gang was nursed back to health by his faithful companion Tonto. When it was time to ride again the Lone Ranger needed a horse worthy of his mission. Deep in Wild Horse Canyon he found a magnificent white stallion fighting for his life against a buffalo. The Lone Ranger saved him. The white horse stayed. Tonto looked at that gleaming coat and said the horse looked like silver. The name stuck — and so did the legend.
Silver wasn't just a horse on screen. He was shod with silver horseshoes. He moved like the wind and answered to nobody but the Lone Ranger. Smart, fearless, loyal and fast enough to outrun any outlaw who ever tried to escape justice across the American frontier.
When the Lone Ranger made the leap from radio to television in 1949 a magnificent white stallion named White Cloud stepped into the role — standing over 17 hands high, one of the tallest horses ever to appear on an American television screen. Later a horse named Tarzen's White Banner took over and was officially renamed Hi-Yo Silver by the show's owner. Together they brought Silver to life for millions of fans across America week after week.
Silver had his own comic book series running 34 issues. He won the PATSY Award — Hollywood's highest honor for animal performers — in 1957. Clayton Moore who played the Lone Ranger traveled the country with Silver doing personal appearances, parking outside arenas so that every child who came could see the great white horse up close.
The Lone Ranger and Silver appeared together on a United States commemorative postage stamp in 2009 — cementing their place forever in American history and culture.
Every kid who ever galloped across a backyard pretending to be a masked cowboy hero was chasing the legend of one white horse.
That horse was Silver. 🐴🤠
