Wise County Co-Op eliminated Net Metering for new customers on March 29, 2023 and after 5 years Net Metering is completely gone in there district.

For example lets say you used 3000kwh from the grid and then pushed back 4000kwh. You would think they got 1000kwh for free. But under the new place with Wise Electric the 3000kwh was billed at 13 cents per kwh. They only give you whole sale rate for everything you pay back now at 5.5 cents.

New Plan with Wise County:
3000 x .13 = $390.00 Usage
4000 x .055 = $220.00 Solar Credit
Bill before fees would be $170.00
Your bill will include the standard fees and taxes but shown without for easy math. Rates will vary slightly but shows the differences between the two.

Old plan with net metering with Wise County:
4000 - 3000 = Negative 1000
Bill would only be the meter fees nothing else. Wise Electric would have a net 1000kwh for free.

So you can see compared to each other Net Metering is better but still has some room for improvement.
The argument the power company makes is that the customers are riding off of other customers when pre planning on weather and averaging our over production that would prevent that argument from coming to light. Systems that over produce do during peaks times thus shaving the higher rate they pay during the day vs at night when the rates drop on the power companies side.
We pay a fixed rate while the power company pays for bulk and then time of day rate within 15 min windows within a 24 hour time period.

For those with solar just a heads up. Wise Electric sent out letters with a form to complete if you want to switch from net metering to a cash back method. I discussed this with them last year but things have changed. If you switch to this new plan from Net Metering, it will cost you.

For new installs happening now and moving forward this is the only plan. Net Metering is NOT available. For those that have existing installs, your grandfathered in for five years after which you will be forced to move to this new plan.

The reason the new plan is not nearly as good as if you send the company x amount of KW/h, you get back the credit worth of the energy at retail price, which is what you pay. Under the new plan, you will be getting paid wholesale pricing, which is about 5 cents.

Realistically, with the number I crunched with a few of my existing customers along with myself, you will need to produce 2.5x more energy than you use. Otherwise it will cost you, meaning you wont make as much. Feel free to reach out to Wise Electric, Russell Cross is their main residential solar guy.

Just got our bill for April and our bill was the base $30 minimum charge. Im guesstimating we will have this until September. Solar can save you money if you dont over pay. And stay away from leases. Do a loan thru your bank or credit union.

As a note, I know I dont install on houses unless it has metal roofs, but im good with selling you what’s needed. The markup is insane, especially when you consider the panels, inverters, batteries and so on all have a better rating that what most companies are using.
