Dr. Marvin Poston (1915-2002) and his family migrated from Canada to California where he was the first African American optometrist to receive his training at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Optometry in 1935. He was also the first African American to be honored as “Optometrist of the Year” by the American Optometric Associates, the highest professional award from the AOA!

Macular degeneration affects the macula, causing central vision loss. This results in difficulty reading, seeing details, recognizing faces, poor depth perception, and light sensitivity.
