A wonderful post!
Happy Registered Dietitian Nutritionist day to all my friends! I am often asked the difference between a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and any other nutritionist, so I thought today would be a good opportunity to bring that up.
Technically, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist and offer nutritional advice (in most states, anyway). Some who do so may have advanced nutrition degrees and be very credible, but others may have no education or credentials in the field at all. In order to become and remain a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist you have to meet the following criteria:
• Earn a minimum of a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university or college
• Complete a 6-12 month internship at a health-care facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies.
• Pass a rigorous national examination
• Complete continuing professional educational requirements throughout your career.
We RDNs work in health care systems, foodservice, business, research and educational organizations, media, private practice and more. Like any health professional, our individual philosophies and approaches may differ, and we don’t always agree on everything, but every one of us has a baseline of expertise in the field that you can count on. Go to www.eatright.org to learn more about the field and find an RDN in your area.
