I was 20 when Dylcia Pagan was released, and a bunch of us met her over breakfast in Old San Juan. It felt like reuniting with a family member who was always there, and that morning left like the start of years of her checking in with wisdom and candor. My most beautiful memory of her, however, is one of profound nurturing and kindness.

In June 2003, I photographed Dylcia for my LatiNatural Project. I was overbooked, booked to photograph over 30 women in one day, and I was 6 months pregnant! I had been on my feet for about 15 hours and these portraits were intimate, so I needed to be mindful and take my time. Although she could have left after her session, Dylcia waited hours, talking and laughing with the other remarkable women, and she stayed until the end so that she could offer me Reiki.

Thank you, Dylcia, for your sacrifices, cariño, and support throughout the years. You have left an indelible mark in our hearts and are a testament to the power of the human spirit.

I am saddened to hear the news of the passing of Elba Cabrera, the phenomenal woman known lovingly in the NY Latino community as the Madrina of the Arts.

I am grateful to have been introduced to Elba by Sandra Guzman, who recommended her to be one of my first subjects for my Latinatural collection when it was going to premiere at Sandra’s book signing for The Latina’s Bible in 2002. Elba came in to be photographed with her young granddaughter, Carina. During those first moments we shared, as I spoke to her to craft the image, she shared both her strength and vulnerability with me.

Looking back, it’s clear that Elba wanted her photo to capture her legacy: her deep love for family and community, and her unwavering support for them. After our shoot, she didn’t just become one of my subjects; she became a true champion for me, just like she was for so many artists. Having her support and blessing meant the world to me. And what’s incredible is that even after more than 20 years, she still talked about our shoot with so much love and gratitude.

Elba, you did so much for me and countless other artists. You added light to my journey, and I’ll always be thankful to you for that. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
