Announced today, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection introduced new rules that would make it easier for New Yorkers to cancel subscriptions and avoid surprise “junk fees.”
The city’s new “Click-To-Cancel” rule would require businesses to make canceling a subscription as simple as signing up, while a separate proposal would require companies to show the full price of goods and services upfront.
“It is estimated that the average family of four loses more than $3,200 per year on junk fees and hidden costs. New Yorkers already struggling to afford the basics simply do not have that kind of money to lose,” Mamdani said.
The “Click-To-Cancel” rule takes effect October 1 and is expected to save New Yorkers millions each year.
