Night 2 at
Brooklyn, NY
December 12, 2025

Earlier this year I saw Cursive open up for Bright Eyes at the Brooklyn Paramount. I dubbed this the year of Saddle Creek, swooning to the bands that soundtracked my high school years and continue to be on rotation in my music library over the course of the last 20 years. I smiled as I came across their music in my old CD collection, which I retrieved this summer from the house I grew up in. I laughed to myself when I wore my Cursive shirt to Rilo Kiley’s reunion tour. I was content. 🎵 THIS is the latest from Saddle Creek…

And then, Cursive announced a headlining club tour to close out the year. I had to get tickets as soon as they went on sale, I wanted to be up front and I wanted to photograph them again. I wanted to time travel through the music to the way it made me feel when I was listening to them for the first time.

I first photographed Cursive in 2015 when they played Saint Vitus during their Ugly Organ anniversary shows. I was fairly new to concert photography at the time and I remember being so happy with my captures but it literally took me a decade to share them. (Check my grid to see). So, it was important to me that this time around, I get them up quickly.

The Ugly Organ reissue tour

Brooklyn, NY
March 12, 2015

A decade ago I was front row at Saint Vitus, a venue that’s since closed, thrilled to see Cursive perform their album The Ugly Organ in its entirety joined by their original cellist , who had parted the band a decade prior.

I was joyed when to hear all the songs that soundtracked my high school years. The album came out in 2003, which was 12 years before these photos were captured and 22 years from today.

Last month I saw Cursive open for Bright Eyes, and I felt nostalgic just the same. Later this year I’ll finally see Rilo Kiley live and I cannot help but think how formative was as a record label, as a curator to a lot of the music that became so formative to me.

I remember feeling proud of the captures I got in 2015 but I never edited or shared these photos, until now. This pastJanuary I was looking through my hard drive and revisited them. And since then, I cannot stop thinking of my photograph of Gretta resting her head on her cello. So now, I am sharing it.

I started photographing concerts on New Year’s Eve 2014, only three months before this show. Looking at these photographs I think about what I’d have done differently, how I could compose the images better now with my current set up. I think about how despite what I’d do differently, I’m still very pleased, because I just can’t stop thinking about that photograph of Gretta, and if a photograph sticks with you all these years, if it transports you to a time and space, that’s perfection in and of it self; that’s the point.

A dip into my archives:
at 2016

I was searching for a specific photograph I made in 2016 in my archives to make a print and decided to just browse around. I came across photographs I captured at Moogfest in North Carolina in May 2016.

When I digitally thumbed through my images from Grimes’ headlining set I audibly gasped when I came across this one. It was like a diamond in the rough and I just love the way it looks in B&W.

It was obvious that even though this wasn’t the photograph I intended to make a print of tonight, I just had to get a print of this one too.
