Happy Sunday. Bunny Chow (Durban, South Africa)
A must when you’re in South Africa. I tried it in Cape Town delicious
Bunny chow is a legendary street food that comes from the Indian community in Durban during the apartheid era.
Indian laborers, brought to South Africa in the 1800s, created this dish as a practical way to carry curry to work, using a hollowed-out loaf of bread as an edible bowl. It was easy to transport, share, and eat without utensils.
The name “bunny” is believed to come from “bania,” referring to Indian merchants who first sold it — not from the animal
Today, it’s a cultural staple of Durban and South Africa bold, flavorful, and deeply rooted in resilience and community. The vegetarian version, often made with beans or lentils, aligns beautifully with plant-based wellness and nourishment
Food as culture. Food as history. Food as healing.
