You think YOU dig butterflies? Emile-Allain Séguy, professionally known as E.A. Séguy, REALLY dug butterflies or, en Francois, papillons. Emile-Allain created the popular books Papillons and Insectes. These illustration-filled tomes full of vividly colored butterflies and insects made using the pochoir—French for “stencil”—technique. It was painstaking. Each color in a pochoir design has its own stencil, then layers of gouache are applied through each stencil using a brush or sponge. The resulting colors are rich, intense, and jewel-like. The artist referred to scientific illustrations as he composed 81 butterflies within 16 plates, as well as four additional plates of decorative patterns inspired by butterfly wings. https://buff.ly/dIITmiO
