Chef Dad's Table

Pecans are the only major tree nut native to North America. They are technically "drupes" - fruits with a pit inside - rather than true nuts, and their name is derived from an Algonquin word meaning "a nut that requires a stone to crack". A single pecan tree can live and produce nuts for up to 300 years, but it takes roughly 6 to 12 years for a newly planted tree to reach maturity and begin producing nuts. Pecans are healthy, too. According to the USDA, pecans rank among the highest of all nuts in total antioxidant capacity, and they contain over 19 vitamins and minerals and are packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
