Summer is meant to be fun, but it doesn't have to come at the cost of your child's momentum.

Research shows students can lose academic progress over the summer, especially when routines disappear. The good news is that small, everyday habits can help keep executive function skills active without making summer feel like another semester.

Swipe through for four simple strategies you can start this week.

The best executive function coaches don't just teach these skills. They practice them.

This week, our coaching team completed an executive function self-assessment and reflected on where they thrive, where they struggle, and what small changes could help them grow.

Because the same skills we help students build every day—planning, organization, flexibility, focus, and self-reflection—are skills we're actively working on too.

One of the biggest lessons? Growth rarely comes from massive overhauls. It comes from small, intentional actions repeated consistently over time.

Students don't need perfect role models. They need coaches who understand the work because they're doing it themselves.

Our all-star coach, Rhina Guzman, wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until high school. Like so many students, she spent years believing she was lazy, unmotivated, or simply not trying hard enough.

That experience now shapes the way she coaches students. She understands firsthand what it feels like to be overwhelmed, struggle with consistency, and wonder why things that seem easy for others can feel so difficult.

One of the biggest reasons relationships matter in coaching is because students often open up more when they know the person helping them truly understands.

Most parents don't reach out because of a missing assignment. They reach out because school stress has started affecting life at home. The arguments get more frequent. The reminders stop working. Everyone is frustrated.

One of the most overlooked parts of student support is reducing the tension between parents and students while helping the student build the skills needed to take ownership. The right support system doesn't just improve academics. It helps families get back on the same team.

Research consistently shows that many students lose some academic momentum over the summer months. While maintaining academic skills is important, we believe summer success is about much more than avoiding the "summer slide."

Summer provides something students rarely have during the school year: space. Space to develop routines, build self-awareness, strengthen executive functioning skills, pursue meaningful goals, and practice greater independence.

At Untapped, we see some of the biggest growth happen when students have the freedom to challenge themselves in new ways while still receiving the right amount of structure and support.

We asked several Untapped mentors what summer success looks like from their perspective. While each answer was different, they all pointed to the same idea: success isn't about being busy every minute of the day—it's about building the habits, confidence, and skills that carry into the next school year and beyond.

A tough semester can leave students feeling discouraged and parents feeling unsure about what comes next.

The good news? You do not need to wait until the first day of school to make changes.

One of the most effective things a student can do is start building routines now. Summer creates space to experiment, adjust, and find systems that actually work before academic demands return.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to build habits, confidence, and consistency one step at a time.
