NEW: Lp(a) testing is now recommended for ALL adults - at least once in your lifetime.

Lipoprotein(a) is a genetic risk factor for heart disease that your standard panel does NOT measure. Here’s why it matters:

❤️~20% of people have elevated Lp(a) - and most don’t know it

❤️Elevated Lp(a) (>125nmol/L) increases heart disease risk by 40% - independent of your LDL cholesterol

❤️Very high levels (>430 mol/L) increase risk 4-fold

❤️It’s mostly genetic - diet and exercise barely change it

❤️You only need to test it once (levels stay stable over your lifetime)

What if it’s high? There are no specific Lp(a)-lowering drugs available yet (clinical trials are underway), but knowing your level matters because it should prompt more aggressive management of your OTHER risk factors - especially LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar.

Bottom line for your next doctor’s visit:
Ask for an Lp(a) level - everyone should have this checked once

If you have diabetes, high triglycerides, or metabolic syndrome, ask about ApoB (ApoB counts the actual number of dangerous particles - and that number predicts heart attacks more accurately than LDL-C alone).
