⚠ "McIntosh County Commission will hold a Special Called Meeting TODAY, Friday, July 10, at 4 p.m. at the Old Darien City Hall" to "consider sending a revised, updated zoning ordinance for Hog Hammock to the McIntosh County Zoning Board for a public hearing and recommendation at the Aug. 4, 2026 meeting." (The Darien News)
This comes after Tuesday's packed public hearing, where the McIntosh County Planning & Zoning Commission voted unanimously to table proposed updates to Hog(g) Hummock's zoning ordinance.
That vote followed several island and McIntosh residents, allies, and county staff raised concerns about loopholes, the drafting process, and more, urging "the board and the county commission to 'go back to the drawing board.'"
Building and Zoning Administrator Bryan Boone pointed out that the proposed ordinance "lacks the necessary constraints to prevent structures that are larger than what the stakeholders expected... So because of those loopholes, the draft fails to achieve a core stakeholder objective."

Diamondback terrapin populations in coastal Georgia are at risk due to human activities, including roadway mortality and drowning in crab pots—and Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Georgia DNR is using data to foster policy discussions to support terrapin populations.
“For once we can identify a problem,” said Mark Dodd, Senior Wildlife Biologist with DNR. “We want to try to do some active management before the population gets so low that we have to do this dramatic management that costs a lot of money. We want to be proactive with species.”
🚗 As they expand this important research, there are simple ways YOU can take action now help protect this vulnerable species: chiefly, slow down while you're driving along our marshes and waterways. Leave space between your vehicle and the one in front of you, in case you need to

Happy 250th birthday, America 🇺🇸🥳
As we celebrate our Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, let’s remember our wild neighbors too—some of which have been visiting this coast since before our country was born!
Conservation is patriotic—it’s part of being proud of this special place. If you’re out on the beach this holiday weekend, here are some tips to remember...
🪺Turtle and shorebird nests are fragile and hard to see 👀 Keep off the dunes and soft white sand so you don’t accidentally trample eggs or disturb nests.
👋 Wildlife need their space 🐢 It’s exciting to witness a loggerhead coming onshore to lay her eggs, but please keep your distance. Same goes for our shorebirds; leash your dogs and aim your frisbees well to avoid stressing out nesting pairs.
🏠 The beach is their home ⛱️ How would you feel if a visitor left your living room full of trash? Leave the beach better than it was when you found it by filling holes you dig, leveling sandcastles you build, and bringing home your gear and garbage.
🎇 Fireworks may be lighting up the night sky this weekend, but remember that sea turtles DIG the dark! 🌟 Shield or turn off artificial lighting that shines onto the beach, and turn out your flashlights or use turtle-friendly red ones. Your natural night vision will help you see nature’s fireworks, like stars and bioluminescence.
☀️ And, any time you’re outside, keep plenty of water and sun protection for you and your loved ones nearby—it’s HOT, y’all 🥵
It’s a great privilege to live alongside wildlife like we do on Georgia’s coast. Let’s do our part to ensure they’re protected this weekend too 🤝
“The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” — Winston Churchill
Let's look at our past 250 years as a nation with clear eyes, so that together we can build a next 250 years worth celebrating 🇺🇸

👥 Hog(g) Hummock Community zoning update: McIntosh Planning & Zoning Commission is hosting a public hearing next Tuesday, July 7th to review and receive comments on a draft ordinance for the Sapelo Island community.
👉 Planning & Zoning Commission Public Hearing
🗓️ Tuesday, July 7 @ 5:30 PM
📍 200 Pine St, Darien (Former Board of Education Office)
We're glad to see McIntosh County taking steps to work with its citizens. We encourage the public to show up at the meeting to support the people of Sapelo Island and their vision for their community.
📝 OHM does have some concerns about the language, including a potential loophole around accessory dwellings that could allow Sapelo landowners to build homes larger than 1,800 square feet under roof. Read the draft zoning ordinance for yourself and learn more at OneHundredMiles.org/Take-Action
Can't make it to the P&Z Meeting next week? Mark your calendar for the public hearing at the McIntosh County Commission regular meeting on July 14. More soon!
