When it comes to clinical research awareness and education, engaging with communities is one of the ways our team is expanding access to enrolling studies. Earlier this year, our western New York and northern New Jersey research experts attended events to do just that!

When more people know about research happening in their community, there is more opportunity for increased participation, ultimately leading to better outcomes and treatment options for all.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is common yet often misunderstood—but for millions, it’s a daily reality that shapes how they work, live, and plan their lives. During IBS Awareness Month, it’s an important reminder of what IBS is and how to feel better.

IBS is a gastrointestinal condition that causes recurring abdominal pain or discomfort along with changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation, or both. While IBS can look different for everyone, symptoms like bloating, cramping, gas, and unpredictable bathroom habits can have a real impact on daily life. One important thing to know is that IBS is a “functional” GI disorder, meaning the digestive system may look normal on routine tests even though symptoms are very real. IBS can be long-lasting and may come and go over time, with symptoms changing in type or severity.

The good news is that IBS is manageable. While there is currently no cure, many people find relief through a combination of lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, stress management, and medical care. Learning more about IBS can help people recognize symptoms, feel less alone, and take steps toward better support and quality of life.
