Think rain is enough to keep your new street tree alive? Think again.
π§οΈπ³ Young trees need about 10β15 gallons of water per week during their first few years β rainfall alone often doesn't cut it, especially during dry spells. That's why watering bags are such a game-changer for newly planted trees. Swipe to bust today's myth! π

π³ Trees have been talking to each other this whole time β we just didn't know how to listen.
When a tree is under attack from insects, it releases chemical signals that neighboring trees can detect and respond to, thereby producing compounds that make their leaves harder to digest before the insects even arrive. A whole neighborhood on defense, no group chat required. ππΏ
The more trees on your block, the stronger the network. Request yours at www.buffalotrees.org π³
Did you know that proper pruning helps keep street trees healthy, safe, and growing strong? π³
Hereβs what you need to know:
β
Remove broken, dead, or rubbing branches
β
Prune back to the next live bud or just above the branch collar
β
Use clean, sharp hand pruners or loppers for all cuts
β
Residents may prune low branches or basal sprouts from the ground using hand tools only
When should you prune?
Winter is generally the best time to prune because branches are easier to see, diseases are less likely to spread, and trees experience less stress. Most minor pruning can be done year-round, though some species require special care.
π Notice a street tree that needs attention? Residents are encouraged to call 311 to request pruning. The City of Buffalo regularly prunes street trees and appreciates residents reporting concerns.
Small actions from residents like you help keep Buffaloβs urban forest safe, healthy, and thriving for generations to come. ππ±

Meet π³
A few years ago, the City of Buffalo planted a street tree at Madeline's home, and that was it. She was hooked. Now as a Tree Ambassador, Madeline is on a mission to share that experience with as many neighbors as possible. For her, trees are about beauty, biodiversity, and the simple joy of watching birds and bugs thrive on a healthier block. π
Fun fact: she completed her first triathlon last summer. So trees aren't the only thing she's chasing. πββοΈπ΄ββοΈπββοΈ

π³ Myth Busting Monday!
Have you ever seen a tree that's been "topped"? It might look tidy at first, but it's actually one of the worst things you can do for a tree's health. Topping stresses the tree, opens the door to disease, and creates weaker, more dangerous branches over time. If a tree feels "too big," call 311 if it's a street tree, or talk to a certified arborist if it's on your private property. πΏ
