Can you spot the difference?
One of the most common mistakes we see is planting trees too deep.
The root flare, where the trunk begins to widen into the roots, should always be visible at or just above the soil line, not buried underground.
When a tree is planted too deeply, the risk of trunk rot increases. It can also encourage girdling roots, reduce oxygen to the root system, and ultimately shorten the tree's lifespan.
When planted correctly, the root flare remains visible, allowing for healthier root development, a stronger, more stable tree, and better long-term growth.
A healthy tree starts with proper planting. If your tree looks like a telephone pole disappearing straight into the ground, it may be planted too deep.

Oak Wilt can move fast and these leaves are a strong example of what early symptoms can look like.
Notice the browning and dead tissue moving along the veins while parts of the leaf stay green. This “veinal necrosis” pattern is a common warning sign arborists look for when identifying potential oak wilt in Texas oaks.
If you notice sudden leaf drop, discoloration, or rapid canopy decline in your trees, don’t ignore it. Early detection and proper treatment can help slow the spread and protect surrounding oaks.
