Check this out from a family perspective...
Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act allows some organizations to pay employees with disabilities less than minimum wage. This is a controversial topic of much debate right now across the country.
In a video interview, Christa Preston from the Institute for Community Inclusion shares about her family’s experience with 14c: “If this debate had taken place two decades ago, my family and I would have been advocating for 14(c). With the knowledge I have gained through [my] experience, I can no longer advocate for 14(c).”

Yesterday, the House Committee on Education and Labor introduced the Transformation to Competitive integrated Employment Act (HR2373). This bipartisan bill calls for the phase-out of 14(c) with a simultaneous investment in resources to support states and employers to transition workers with disabilities into fully competitive and integrated employment in their communities.

“The Commission today calls for the end of the Section 14(c) program, because it continues to limit people with disabilities from realizing their full potential,” Catherine E. Lhamon, Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. “In addition the program suffers from wildly insufficient federal oversight and civil rights review, and apparently routine noncompliance, begging the question why we as a nation continue its operation.”
