In 1797, Poland had ceased to exist as a country — and yet its soldiers were still fighting.

After three brutal partitions by Russia, Prussia, and Austria between 1772 and 1795, the Polish state was wiped from the map of Europe. But thousands of Polish soldiers refused to accept the end. They formed the Polish Legions under General Jan Henryk Dąbrowski and marched to northern Italy to fight alongside Napoleon, hoping that French military victories would eventually restore their homeland.

It was in that exile, in the Italian city of Reggio Emilia, that Józef Wybicki wrote the words that would become Poland's national anthem. The opening line — "Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, kiedy my żyjemy" — translates to "Poland has not yet perished, so long as we still live." It was a declaration of defiance, a promise that the nation existed in its people even when it had no territory.

The song, known as the Mazurek Dąbrowskiego, spread through the Polish diaspora and became the anthem of every subsequent generation that fought for independence. When Poland finally regained its freedom in 1918 after 123 years of partition, the song became the official national anthem — and it remains so today.

Few national anthems carry this much weight. Every word was written by people who had lost everything and refused to stop believing.

Do you know the words to Poland's anthem?
