From Gordon County Emergency Management Agency:
On Friday, January 14 at 2 p.m. Gordon County and Calhoun public safety, public works, school, and other government officials participated in a weather briefing conducted by the National Weather Service (NWS) in reference to the winter weather forecast for this weekend.
According to the NWS, confidence continues to increase for a significant winter storm to affect Georgia, especially in our northeast quadrant. Currently Gordon County is not under a winter storm watch but there is the potential for that to be expanded later today or tonight. The present watch comes to the eastern border of Gordon County.
Precipitation should begin in Gordon County late Saturday and into Sunday initially as rain. As temperatures begin to drop rain could transition into freezing rain or ice and then eventually turn to all snow. Significant ice accumulation is not expected or forecast for Gordon County at this time. Snowfall totals for Gordon County could be between 1-2 inches over the duration of the event. Another potential threat for Gordon County could come overnight Sunday night into Monday morning which would be the potential for black ice as any moisture left on roadways could freeze.
There will be another weather briefing with the NWS January 15 at 2 p.m. We will continue to monitor this situation and pass along updates as they become available. With this potential comes the opportunity to review your plans and make sure you have adequate supplies in case we do receive wintry weather that could affect travel.
