National Chocolate Eclair Day is celebrated annually on June 22, honoring the delicious cream-filled pastry topped with chocolate.
National Chocolate Eclair Day is a food holiday dedicated to enjoying chocolate eclairs, a classic French pastry made from
pate a choux dough, baked into an oblong shape that is light and crisp on the outside and hollow inside, perfect for holding creamy fillings like vanilla or chocolate custard. The word “eclair” means “flash of lightning” in French, possibly because the pastry is eaten quickly or because of the glossy shine of its chocolate topping.
The pastry was first developed in the 19th century by French chef Antonin Carmen. The first known English-language recipe appeared in the 1884 Boston Cooking School Cook Book. In the United States, similar pastries called Long John’s exist, but they differ as they are made from donut dough and typically filled with vanilla pudding or custard.
