Ice Storm Warning – Generator Safety Reminder

Power outages can occur without warning during ice storms, heavy snowfall, or when utility lines are damaged.

Portable generators may help during an outage, but they produce carbon monoxide (CO)—a deadly, odorless and invisible gas.

The risk is real:
• Generator-related incidents cause preventable carbon monoxide poisonings every year
• The greatest danger occurs when generators are used too close to homes or in/near garages

Use generators safely:
✅ Use outdoors only
✅ Keep at least 20 feet (7 metres) from doors, windows, and vents
✅ Never use in a garage—even with the door open
✅ Point exhaust away from buildings
