SFC Watson handed me the radio and said three words none of us wanted to hear.

You're in charge.

Our squad leader had been hit.

I didn't ask for it. Didn't want it.

Wasn't sure I was ready for it. Like it or not there were people counting on me.

We don't have to be happy about the soup sandwich we get handed. But we do have to own it.

Because if we don't own it, who does?

And that's not a rhetorical question. The answer is: someone else.

When we aren't willing to step in as part of the solution, then someone else has to step up

SFC Watson wasn't asking me if I was ready. He was telling me who I needed to BE.

Who do you want to BE? Because who you want to BE will always dictate what you DO.

2. What example are you setting?
3. And when we need you is when it's hard.
