The Highway 17 Laurel Curve Wildlife Crossing is proving to be a massive success for local conservation. Recent data from the second year of the study reveals that over 1,100 animals used the tunnel to navigate safely, with zero wildlife-vehicle collisions reported within the study area.

This follows a successful first year where over 1,000 animals were recorded. After a mountain lion was unfortunately struck at the edge of the initial project site, Caltrans acted quickly on the study’s feedback by extending the directional fencing to better guide animals away from the pavement and toward the safe passage.

The latest results show a significant uptick in use during the spring and summer months, particularly among deer and foxes. It’s been incredible to see parents moving through the crossing with their young, which is vital for the long-term health of these species.

This safe transition allows juveniles to disperse from their parental home ranges and establish their own territories, ensuring essential genetic flow across our landscape. It’s a win-win for both the animals and the people traveling through our beautiful region.
