π¨ WINTER SAFETY ALERT: HEAT LAMP PRECAUTIONS π¨
As temperatures drop across Eddy County, we know many of you are using heat lamps to keep your outdoor pets and livestock warm. While effective, heat lamps are a leading cause of winter structure fires if not used with extreme caution.
Please follow these critical safety guidelines from Eddy County Fire & Rescue:
ποΈ SECURE IT PROPERLY
β’ No Flimsy Clips: Hang lamps using chains or robust clamps. Do not rely on the spring clips that come with many lampsβthey can easily slip.
β’ Keep Your Distance: Mount the lamp at least 20 inches away from the ground, bedding, or the animal.
β’ Add a Guard: Always use a wire cage or guard to prevent the bulb from touching flammable materials if it falls.
π‘ EQUIPMENT MATTERS
β’ Outdoor Rated Only: Ensure your lamp is specifically labeled for outdoor use to withstand the elements.
β’ Bulb Choice: Use high-quality, hard glass bulbs that are less likely to shatter from temperature changes.
β’ Electrical Safety: Plug the lamp into an outlet with an arc fault interrupter (AFCI). Check cords for fraying and ensure animals cannot chew on them.
π§Ή KEEP IT CLEAN & MONITORED
β’ Clear the Area: Keep the space free of cobwebs, dust, hay, and dry bedding, which can ignite instantly.
β’ Watch It: Monitor the setup closely. Do not leave heat lamps unattended for long periods if possible.
β’ Be Prepared: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure you have a smoke detector with an alarm loud enough to be heard from your house.
Letβs keep our community and our animals safe this winter!
