Today's Toolbox Talk Tuesday topic is... Mind Wandering!

In our always-connected “go, go, go” world, it is so incredibly easy to get lost in our thoughts and not be present in the moment. To deal with all of the stimuli present in our environment, our brains often switch to autopilot to make it easier for us to complete tasks.

Why Allowing Your Mind to Wander is So Dangerous:

Mind wandering, or just a general lack of focus, allows you to miss more details in your work environment. These details can include hazards that result in injury or property loss. Think about your drive to work. You made thousands of little decisions in order to get in today. Everything from braking, to scanning roads, to making turns, etc. were probably done without you really having to consciously think about it.

Best Practices to Ensure You Are Focused on the Task at Hand:

🧠 Eliminate any distractions from your immediate work area. (Such as noise, people, clutter, etc.)

🧠 As you complete your work task break down each step in your head to bring your focus back on the task and not anything else.

🧠 Stop and refocus on the task at hand when you recognize that your thoughts are not on the work task you are completing.
