What Counts as Trauma?

Researchers and therapists have tried to define trauma for quite a while now. What counts? There are some great definitions out there and some not so great. Menakem and Levine have similar definitions, but my favorite I heard from Bridger Falkensetein,

"Whenever something comes into our internal space that is too much too soon, too much for too long or too little for too long. "

Many of us don’t get all we need from our attachment relationships growing up. However, we can learn to be our own best parent as adults, i.e. being the “parent” we needed while a child. calls this earning security. Through therapy and/or other co-regulating relationships we can learn self-regulation and the qualities that come with it: resilience, boundaries, and how to be healthy interpersonally.
