Here's the workflow sequence I teach in Topical Maps Unlocked and that Floyi is built around:

Brand foundation → target audience → buyer personas → topical map → detailed brief → draft → publish → measure

Most teams jump straight to the topical map step. That's step 4 in this sequence. Steps 1-3 are where authority is actually won or lost.

A topical map built without clear brand positioning and buyer understanding is just a topic list with better formatting. The map needs to be shaped by who you serve, what problems they have, and how they evaluate options.

The brief is the other step most teams skip. It's the quality-control layer that decides whether a draft will be sharp or generic before the writing even starts.

I wrote a full article breaking this down. Link in the comments.

Quick example that shows the difference between a topic list and a real topical map.

Say a B2B tool wants to build authority around "resource planning." The target persona is an ops director at a mid-size agency evaluating tools after a failed project.

Topic list approach:
- what is resource planning
- resource planning best practices
- resource planning vs capacity planning
- resource planning tools

Strategic map approach:
- what is resource planning for agencies
- how agencies recover from resource planning failures
- what ops directors get wrong about utilization tracking
- how to evaluate resource planning tools when your team resists change

Every term in the first list is on-topic. But none of them are shaped by who you're trying to reach or what those buyers need to decide.

The second one covers the same territory but built around the persona's journey.

This is from a new article I wrote on what topical authority actually requires. Link in the comments.

I just published a new article on topical authority and I think it's going to challenge how a lot of teams think about their content strategy.

The core idea: topical authority was never about publishing the most pages on a subject. It was never a race to cover every keyword or build the biggest cluster.

It's about whether the right audience sees your brand as credible on something they care about. Coverage is one input. It was never the definition.

The article breaks down the full workflow: brand foundation, target audience, buyer personas, topical map, detailed brief, draft, publish, measure.

Most teams start at the topical map step. That's too late. Authority is won or lost before the map ever gets built.
