Honoring a legacy: It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mary Jacobs "Mitzi" Amerson, 63, of Southport, NC, on May 29, 2026.
A chance meeting: Mitzi was a former long-time board member of The Ruffian Foundation Cat Sanctuary and Shelter. Her journey with us started years ago when, working as a pre- and post-op surgical nurse, she bonded with a current board member in her care over Mitzi's cute cat-print scrubs and a shared love for felines.
Incredible dedication: That single conversation led to years of much needed and appreciated support for the sanctuary.
Together with Barry, her husband of 41 years, Barry and Mitzi provided thousands of pounds of food, raised vital funds, and continue to provide mosquito control for the sanctuary property ensuring comfort and enhanced safety for the resident cats, volunteers and visitors.
Continuing the mission: Barry beautifully continues this vital support to this day.
Rest in peace: We deeply cherish Mitzi’s memory and send our deepest condolences to Barry and her beloved fur family. 🐾❤️
