“Dear Breast Cancer,

Before I found you, I just gave birth to my first baby boy. I breast fed him for 7 months, it made him healthy and strong. It connected us in a way I’ll forever be grateful for. I was 25 at the time.

When my breasts dried up, I found you, but I didn’t know it was you. The thought of you never even crossed my mind. I thought you were just a clogged milk duct. 8 months later, you grew, a lot. You became painful and concerning. But I still never thought it was you.

I had an ultrasound and biopsy because there was very high suspicion it was you. I knew in my gut you were there. Three long days I had to wait to find out if you were in my body.

The doctors confirmed you were in my right breast and lymph nodes. Stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma. I had no idea what any of this meant. You tried to take my life. You tried to take me away from my baby.

But the truth is you were never going to take me. I was strong enough to fight you. I thought you were going to take away my privilege of having more children, so I saved my eggs. 15 rounds of poison shrunk you. A double mastectomy and lymph node dissection removed you. Now the last step is to burn you with radiation so I have a better chance of having a long cancer free life.

Since I learned you were in my body, you have made me a better person. I am stronger, kinder, smarter, grateful, hopeful, and I know I can do anything I put my mind to now. I now share my story and educate women and men on breast health. Now I know what my purpose is and it’s all because of you. Thank you for choosing me to be a fighter. You knew I would win all along.

Now at 26, I beat you. You didn’t take control of me, I took control of you. That is how I won. My scars will always remind me of this long, hard, beautiful journey we went through.
