Like many Latin dances, rumba developed gradually in Cuba. It was performed as a ballroom dance with music that was slowed down and moves that were more sedated. As a result, it is now the second-slowest of the Latin dances, with the only slower dance being the bolero.

Some of the most legendary male ballet dancers include Erik Bruhn, Frederick Ashton, Rudolf Nureyev, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Each one was a well-known dancer in his own right; only Baryshnikov is still living.

Generally, Latin dances evolved over time as individual steps were developed to flesh out the repertoire of each dance. In fact, many Latin dances still have an improvisational component to complement the steps.
