Prairie Rivers Network
At Prairie Rivers Network, we protect water, heal land, and inspire change.
Teachers, parents, students, and Prairie Rivers Network staff all gathered in Harrisburg, IL last week to plant over 2,000 native plants in a nearly 7,500 square foot prairie plot right outside the doors of the Bulldog Early Learning Academy (BELA).
This SUNBEES project, developed by PRN in partnership with Eldorado Impact, powered by Sol Systems, not only provides habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, but lays the groundwork for a future outdoor classroom. The goal of SUNBEES is to give children a hands-on experience with native plants and learn just how important they are for our environment.
“This project is opening up new ways for outdoor learning, encouraging teachers, staff, and students to include nature in their daily routines,” said Liz Mackenbach, PRN’s Habitat and Biodiversity Organizer. “BELA has always encouraged curiosity, and now, with a wildflower garden right outside, students have a living classroom to explore and care for.”

PRN’s Nina Struss and Robert Hirschfeld got the chance to see the Quad Cities from a completely different viewpoint—up in the air! Huge thank you to LightHawk for taking our team over Nahant Marsh, the Southwest Rock Island Wetlands, and along the Rock Island River to Green Valley Nature Preserve.
By seeing these landscapes from above, we can get a birds-eye view of these valuable ecosystems. Prairie Rivers Network is working to strengthen efforts to protect the natural infrastructure in our state, like these wetlands and set-asides that help reduce flooding, protect drinking water, and keep communities resilient and safe.
