THIS is what it’s all been about…The Heartstring story.
“April 28th at a rodeo, of all places, started a change in my life. I don't talk about my time in the Army very often. Usually it's just "Yeah, I was in for almost 9 years." and leave it alone. I met a wonderful woman at the rodeo from the HeartStrings Foundation.
I mentioned to her that I just don't feel like I did enough. Mainly, because I didn't deploy. However, knowing I signed the DD93 and SGLI (Next of Kin & life insurance documentation) before their deployment and having to pull that information and send it to the liaison officer because they were KIA takes a mental toll in itself. (Meaning that soldier was sitting across from me and giving me their info) After 20 years, I'm still not over that. Not sure I ever will.
The next night I wanted to tell her I enjoyed meeting her and safe travels back home. She seemed very excited to see me again. I wasn't sure why at the time. She asked for my information and I wrote it down.
As I turned around, she was holding a beautiful guitar and said, "This is for you.". I didn't understand why. She said my story stuck with her. I didn't understand why. It's just my uneventful story. She said there are many soldiers that feel that way and should be appreciated and remembered. I don't think I ever realized other soldiers felt like I do.
Granddad told me you don't cry at a rodeo. She made me cry TWICE!!! I was so blown away! I couldn't believe that my story could affect someone in that way. I don't usually get speechless, but at that moment I was.
I came home and showed my mom (who I take care of) and she cried when I told her what happened. She was happy I was recognized and appreciated for my service and hopes the more I play the guitar the more I'll be more proud of what I did.
Since I was blessed with this beautiful guitar, I've been learning 3 chords. I've also realized it's not as easy or comfortable as others make it look! I have to build up the calluses on my fingers! With Cody (my son) and Todd (my fiance) both knowing how to play, I'll be able to have personal lessons.
I'm hoping learning the guitar will help me deal with my anxiety and depression in a more productive and happy way. I'm interested to see what I can do. ~ Davi
