Hurricane Hugo 25th Anniversary 09/22/2015

An event that literally changed the shape of the Charleston Lowcountry...

Hurricane Hugo 25th Anniversary Hurricane Hugo raked the Lowcountry Sept. 21-22, 1989. Thirteen South Carolina residents and 36 elsewhere died as a direct result of the storm. Tens of thousands were left homeless and half the state without electrical power.

In Awendaw is the northernmost shell ring in the US, a place where Native Americans over 4,000 years ago lived. The shell midden, whose edge is in the foreground, was created from many family dinners... It was a great day for fieldwork in the Lowcountry!
