We rarely asked if a file was impressive enough.

The real question was simpler, and harder to fake: could we understand how this student makes choices?

The strongest applications did more than list achievements. They made the pattern behind those achievements legible.

That is usually the difference between a file that reads well and a file that feels clear.

Two students can look nearly identical on paper.

In committee, the difference was often in the file itself. One gave us context for the grades, the environment, and the choices behind the record. The other was a list of accomplishments and a few missing pieces we had to guess at.

It was usually less about who was stronger, and more about which application helped us understand the student without having to fill in the blanks.
